Getting to know Matt Maley D.C.
Hello! It is a bit odd to write about yourself, but here we go! I have always been amazed by what the human body can do. If you exercise more your body gets stronger, if you stretch more you become more flexible etc.. The body always seems to adapt according to how you challenge it and with time and consistency amazing changes happen. At the University of Louisville I majored in Health and Human Performance with concentrations in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science. I used this degree to become a NSCA certified personal trainer. Early on I was shocked that many of my clients needed some form of rehabilitation before we could start a standardized training program. This pushed me toward more education and training into rehabilitative services until I found my self running a rehab area for a Chiropractor. It was an eye opening experience. There would be patients that should not have gotten better, at least from what I had learned up to that point, but they did in spite of my "expert" opinion. This kept happening and decided I needed to know more. I attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa where I became a Chiropractor myself. Now I utilize my knowledge to put together personalized programs of care for patients to allow them to take back control of their function and mobility.
What to expect at our office for the first visit?
It is my goal to give the best care I can for patients. To do this I have tried to make the process as simple as I could, but there are some things you cannot get around like paperwork. When you first come in you will be handed some paperwork to fill out so I can begin to get some working background knowledge of what you would like us to look into. You will then be asked questions concerning these things so we can get a thorough working history. Finally we will do a full examination involving:
Orthopedic testing
Neurologic testing
Range of Motion testing
Postural findings
and
Chiropractic Analysis
It is a lot, and does take some time, but it gives me a detailed picture of what is involved and where you are at. With this information I take the time to formulate the best course of action for you to improve.
What to expect on subsequent visits?
Once all the information is gathered and reviewed, a course of action is planned out specific to you and your findings. Visits become much more straight forward after the first visit. I like to say "we now know what's going on, we have a plan and all we need to do now is execute". Care will normally consist of Chiropractic Adjustments, rehabilitative exercise, trigger point therapy etc. A visit will normally take around 10-15 minutes, but that is dependent on how much needs to be done that day. If there is more it may take a little longer, if there is less it may be a little bit shorter of a visit.
How are you different than other Chiropractic Offices?
I include this question in the about section because it gets asked often or the comment comes up that I do things differently than what people have experienced in the past. Honestly, I'm not totally sure how I'm different. Most Chiropractors have your best interest at heart and I'm no different . I use the best knowledge and research I've acquired and incorporate it to give you the best treatment I can, again most Chiropractors I know do the same. I take extra time in the exam to isolate which specific tissues (bones, joints, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, discs etc.) are contributing or causing your pain. I use current research to determine expected time frames and outcomes with conditions that are like yours and explain expected heal times for the tissues involved. I also let you know if something is better handled with a different treatment(PT, Surgery etc.) and help you find the best course to get to that. As I see it you came to me for help, I'm dedicated to do that even if the best course of action is not through me.
How do you make your Adjustments?
This is right up there with the most asked questions I receive so it is worth mentioning. I use a variety of techniques of Adjustments. If requested and it is found to be safe for the person and their condition I will perform Manual Adjustments(crackle and pop), or Drop Table techniques. Most often an instrument will be used for Adjustments. I primarily use the Activator or Impulse Adjusting instruments. These 2 instruments have been validated by research to be very effective. They are often found to be less strenuous on the patient which means quicker recovery time, less soreness and safe for a wide age range of people. I will be writing more about these instruments in the "Blog" section of the website in the future to fully explain their benefit.
